President Biden Secures Commanding Victory in Nevada Primary, Extending Winning Streak President Joe Biden effortlessly clinched victory in Nevada’s Democratic presidential primary on Tuesday, marking his second triumph in a recognized nominating contest within four days. The Associated Press swiftly declared Biden the winner as polls closed in Nevada, following his overwhelming 96 percent victory in South Carolina’s primary on Saturday.
Expressing gratitude, Biden said in a late Tuesday statement, “I want to thank the voters of Nevada for sending me and Kamala Harris to the White House four years ago, and for setting us one step further on that same path again tonight.”
Similar to South Carolina, Biden was the sole visible Democratic candidate in Nevada, strategically making a campaign stop in Las Vegas on Sunday, combining a get-out-the-vote effort for the primary with the kickoff of his general election campaign. Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, another Democratic contender, was absent from the ballot due to his entry after Nevada’s deadline. Phillips, focusing on Michigan’s upcoming primary, secured 20 percent of the vote in New Hampshire and placed third in South Carolina.
Although the Nevada primary lacked competitiveness, the state’s general elections are historically close. Biden, who narrowly won the state in 2020, will rely on strong support from its substantial Hispanic voter base, particularly those employed in Las Vegas’s entertainment and hospitality sectors. Biden strategically engaged with unionized casino and hotel workers on Monday following successful contract negotiations.
Jaime Harrison, Democratic National Committee chairman, emphasized the significance of Nevada’s primary in a statement, stating it symbolized the party’s commitment to uplifting voters of color and fostering diverse coalitions crucial to the Democratic Party.
Biden’s decisive victory in Nevada comes after the state transitioned from caucuses to a presidential primary, responding to calls for change following Senator Bernie Sanders’ win in the 2020 caucuses. Nevada’s new voting system, including a statewide primary and vote-by-mail, has maintained its early influence in the Democratic National Committee’s nominating calendar, contrasting with Iowa’s demotion for retaining caucuses.
