Neuralink, a company founded by Elon Musk, has achieved a big breakthrough in the field of neuroscience. They’ve successfully implanted the first computer chip into a person’s brain, as announced by Musk on social media this Monday. This is a significant step forward in Neuralink’s efforts to advance brain-machine interface technology.
According to Musk’s post on X, a volunteer had surgery last Sunday to receive the specially designed-chip, and the patient is recovering well. Musk mentioned that the initial results show promising detection of neuron spikes. Neurons are cells in the brain and nervous system, and spikes occur when they communicate through electrical and chemical signals, allowing us to move, think, and form memories.
The success of this implant brings Neuralink closer to launching its first product, named Telepathy. Musk explained in another post on Tuesday that this technology would allow users to control their phones, computers, and almost any device just by thinking.

However, Neuralink has not yet responded to a request for comment from CBS MoneyWatch. This achievement follows the recent approval the company received to test its brain chips in humans. It’s important to note that Neuralink faced criticism in the past for testing its chips on live monkeys, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,500 animals between 2018 and 2022. This controversial testing led to federal investigation and criticism from both the public and the company’s own employees.
